What Does “Replacing the Clutch” on an S2000 Really Mean?

From the pedal to the flywheel: symptoms, diagnosis, labour and choosing the right parts

Have you recently had the clutch replaced on your Honda S2000?

Do you know exactly which parts were replaced? Were the removed components inspected to establish what had actually worn or failed? And how much of the invoice was for parts—and how much was for the labour required to reach them?

Perhaps you are currently considering clutch work because the pedal feels heavy, the engagement has become inconsistent, something is making a noise or the clutch has begun to slip.

Or perhaps you believe that your clutch is working perfectly well.

Clutch-system deterioration often develops gradually. A pedal that has slowly become heavier, a less precise biting point or a noise that has crept in over several years can begin to feel normal simply because the driver has adapted to it.

These may sound like separate complaints, but they can originate from very different parts of the same operating system.

 

There Is No Single Part Simply Called “the Clutch”

When an owner says that the clutch has been replaced, the phrase can conceal a surprising amount of uncertainty. It may refer to a conventional clutch kit. It may include hydraulic components. It may include the flywheel. Or it may simply repeat the wording used on an invoice without explaining what was actually done.

At TR imports UK, we diagnose the clutch as a complete operating system. We begin where the driver experiences it—the clutch pedal—and follow the mechanical and hydraulic path through the car:

  • Clutch pedal and pedal mechanism

  • Clutch master cylinder

  • Clutch hose and hydraulic line

  • Clutch slave cylinder

  • Release fork and associated boots or pivot points

  • Release-bearing guide

  • Release bearing

  • Clutch disc

  • Clutch cover and pressure-plate assembly

  • Flywheel

  • Rear crankshaft oil seal and other accessible oil seals

The S2000 uses a pull-type clutch mechanism. A change in pedal feel can therefore begin in the hydraulics, arise in the release mechanism or originate inside the bellhousing. Calling every problem “the clutch” does not identify the failed component—and replacing a standard kit does not automatically address every cause.

 

The Symptom Is Not the Diagnosis

Owners usually describe what they feel in everyday language. That is the correct place to start, but it is not the end of the diagnosis. The same symptom can have more than one possible source, while one deteriorating component can produce several different sensations.

Important: This table describes possible areas for investigation. It is not a substitute for inspecting the individual car.

 

Components That Do Not Require Transmission Removal

Not every clutch-system fault requires the transmission to be removed. The pedal mechanism, master cylinder, hose, hydraulic line, slave cylinder and external boots can be inspected and, where necessary, replaced separately.

The master and slave cylinders contain pistons and seals that age through use and time. Deteriorated lubrication can contribute to an unpleasant or inconsistent pedal action. Internal seal failure or fluid loss can cause the pedal to fall or fail to return correctly.

On a higher-mileage or older S2000, replacing only one hydraulic cylinder may leave another component of similar age in service. We therefore consider the condition and history of both cylinders rather than treating the first visible failure as an isolated event.

The advantage is that these external components can be dealt with without repeating the major transmission-removal operation. The important point is still the same: identify which part of the system is producing the symptom before prescribing the repair.

 

The Slave Cylinder: Delayed Assistance or Direct Control?

The clutch slave cylinder can be replaced without removing the transmission, but its specification can materially change how the clutch responds to the driver.

Later S2000 slave-cylinder designs use a restriction in the hydraulic path. This delays part of the clutch engagement response and softens an abrupt release of the pedal. The intention is to reduce driveline shock and make an imperfect clutch release less likely to disturb the car.

For many road users, that assistance is entirely appropriate. For a driver seeking a more immediate relationship between pedal movement and clutch engagement—particularly on circuit—the delay can make the pedal feel less direct.

For our demonstrator, we changed to the genuine Honda early-type non-orifice slave cylinder. The modification does not create more engine power or more clutch capacity. It removes the hydraulic delay, so the clutch responds more faithfully to the driver’s pedal movement. That also means the driver, rather than the restriction, assumes greater responsibility for making a smooth input.

 

What Does a Typical “Clutch Replacement” Include?

In many workshops, a clutch replacement means fitting the conventional three-piece set: the clutch disc, the clutch cover and pressure-plate assembly, and the release bearing.

Those are important wear components, but they are not the complete system. The release-bearing guide may be worn or dragging. The release fork and its operating surfaces may have deteriorated. The flywheel may be heat-marked, worn or unsuitable for the owner’s intended use. An ageing crankshaft oil seal may remain hidden immediately behind the flywheel.

This is why we want to see the removed parts. They tell us what happened inside the car. A worn surface, contamination pattern or damaged bearing is not simply scrap to be thrown away; it is evidence that helps confirm the diagnosis and informs the next repair decision.

The Most Expensive Part May Be Reaching the Components

On an S2000, gaining access to the clutch components is a substantial operation. The work includes lowering or moving supporting structure as required, disconnecting the propeller shaft and removing the transmission from the engine.

Once that labour has been authorised and the bellhousing is open, the economic question changes. The owner is no longer deciding only whether one additional part is worn today. The owner is deciding whether it is sensible to leave an ageing, relatively inexpensive or inaccessible component in place—and risk paying much of the same access labour again later.

That does not mean replacing every component indiscriminately. It means inspecting the complete accessible system and building a plan around condition, vehicle age, intended ownership period, road or track use, and budget.

 

Our Parts Strategy: Genuine Honda First

For a typical road-going S2000, TR imports UK normally recommends genuine Honda replacement components throughout most of the clutch system. The objective is not to make the pedal unnecessarily aggressive or to fit competition parts simply because the transmission is already removed. It is to restore the precision, reliability and usability that suit the owner’s car.

There is one component for which many of our customers choose a carefully selected upgrade: the release-bearing guide.

Why We Offer a WPC-Treated Release-Bearing Guide

The release bearing moves along its guide whenever the clutch is operated. As the guide surface wears or becomes reluctant to slide cleanly, the driver may experience a heavier, rougher or less consistent pedal action.

WPC is a surface treatment, rather than a conventional coating applied as a separate layer. Ultra-fine particles are projected at high speed onto the component, modifying the surface and producing microscopic dimples. The treatment is used to reduce friction, suppress wear, improve oil-film retention and increase surface durability without materially changing the component’s dimensions.

For this application, the additional cost over a standard genuine guide is modest compared with the labour required to reach it. In our experience, it offers a strong cost-to-benefit ratio without introducing a meaningful disadvantage for normal road use.

The standard Honda release-bearing guide—part number 21103-PCY-003—currently costs approximately £60. The CSOhara version uses the same genuine Honda component as its base but adds WPC surface treatment to improve wear resistance. A Lightweight Flywheel Is a Choice, Not an Automatic Upgrade

The flywheel stores rotational energy and smooths the delivery of the engine. Reducing its mass allows engine speed to rise and fall more quickly in response to the accelerator.

In practical terms, a lighter flywheel can make the S2000 feel more alert. Throttle blips during downshifts can produce a faster change in engine speed, and the engine can shed revs more quickly between gear changes. This is what we mean when we describe engine response: the speed and clarity with which the car answers the driver’s input.

There is also a trade-off. With less stored rotational energy, the car may feel less substantial at very low engine speeds, and smooth starts or slow manoeuvring can demand more care. The lightest available part is therefore not automatically the correct part for every owner.

Our demonstrator uses the CSOhara 5.6 kg lightweight flywheel developed for the AP2 application. We selected it as a road-and-track compromise rather than choosing the lightest possible specification.

The genuine AP1 flywheel removed from our demonstrator weighed 6.2 kg. The CSOhara AP2-type chromoly flywheel weighs 5.6 kg—a reduction of 0.6 kg, or approximately 9.7 per cent. This is a relatively modest reduction, chosen to improve the speed at which the engine gains and loses revs without making the car unnecessarily difficult to drive at low speeds.

What We Changed on Our Demonstrator

The clutch system in our demonstrator S2000 gave us the opportunity to test this philosophy as a complete package rather than discuss each component in isolation.

The car retained a genuine Honda clutch cover and clutch disc, while the accessible wear components were refreshed. We installed the CSOhara WPC-treated release-bearing guide, the CSOhara 5.6 kg AP2 lightweight flywheel and a genuine Honda non-orifice, early-type slave cylinder. The master cylinder, release fork and release bearing were also renewed as part of the wider system plan.

This specification has been used in ordinary road driving and tested at Snetterton. That matters because a modification that feels exciting for one fast lap may be irritating in traffic, while a part chosen only for smooth road use may not deliver the directness a driver wants on circuit.

Normal road use

The difference is most noticeable when moving away from a standstill. If I release the clutch in exactly the same way as before, the engine can stall, so the pedals require more careful coordination. Once accustomed to it, however, this is not a problem in normal use, traffic or low-speed manoeuvring.

The pedal weight itself has not changed noticeably. What has changed is the character of the engine: some of the strong push previously felt at low speed has been reduced, but the engine now gains revs in a more linear and eager manner. That is a trade-off rather than an improvement for every owner, but personally, I prefer the new response.

The CSOhara short-height shift knob complements the faster engine response by allowing quicker, more direct gear changes.

Snetterton

The lighter flywheel allows the engine speed to rise and fall more quickly, but that improvement also requires faster and more accurately timed gear changes from the driver.

We combined the flywheel with a CSOhara short-height shift knob, enabling a particularly quick and direct shift action. From outside the car, the changes can sound almost like those of a paddle-shift transmission: fast, smooth and closely matched to the movement of the engine speed.

At Snetterton, this combination made high-rpm upshifts and blipped downshifts feel more immediate. More importantly, the consistency and precision of the response gave me greater confidence when changing gear on the circuit.

The trade-off is that leisurely gear changes are less well matched to the faster fall in engine speed. The driver has to work with the response rather than expect the car to wait.

How We Plan an S2000 Clutch Job

A useful clutch quotation should explain more than the price of a kit. Before recommending a plan, we consider:

  • What the driver feels and when the symptom occurs

  • The age, mileage and recorded replacement history of the car

  • The condition of the hydraulic and pedal-side components

  • Which components require transmission removal to access

  • Whether the car is used for touring, regular road driving, fast-road use or circuit work

  • Whether the owner wants original Honda behaviour or a more direct response

  • How long the owner intends to keep the car

  • The available budget and the cost of repeating access labour later

The result may be a straightforward genuine Honda refresh. It may include a WPC-treated guide for durability and feel. It may include a carefully chosen lightweight flywheel and non-orifice slave cylinder for an owner who values response and direct control. The correct answer depends on the car and the driver—not on a universal shopping list.

 

Before You Authorise “a Clutch Replacement”

If your S2000 has recently had its clutch replaced, ask what was fitted and look at the removed components if they are available. Understanding the previous work gives you a better baseline for future maintenance.

If you are already considering clutch work—or if this article has made you recognise a symptom that you had previously accepted as normal—then you have found it at the right time.

Nothing has been authorised, the transmission has not yet been removed and the opportunity to plan the work properly has not been lost.

 

That is good news.

Before deciding what to replace, establish where the problem begins, consider how the car is used and decide how much of the system should sensibly be refreshed while access is available.

A well-planned clutch job should not simply make the car drive again. It should restore the operation of the system, use the labour intelligently and support the way you intend to enjoy your S2000 in the years ahead.
