Copen Full Inspection

A refresh or restoration should not begin with a list of parts. It should begin with understanding the condition of the car.

Our Full Inspection establishes a clear baseline before any servicing, repair or restoration work is planned. We examine the vehicle as a complete system, identify what requires attention and distinguish between items that should be kept, monitored, serviced or replaced.

The inspection applies to both generations of the Daihatsu Copen: L880K/L881K and LA400K/LA400A.

A comprehensive condition assessment covering the Copen’s mechanical systems, engine health, wheel alignment and areas commonly affected by age, wear and corrosion.

You will receive a completed inspection record, followed by a review of our findings and recommended priorities.

We review the findings with the owner before deciding what should happen next. Not every ageing component needs to be replaced immediately.

What Happens After the Inspection?

ONGOING CARE

Service & Maintenance

A service schedule is most useful when the condition and previous maintenance of the car are already understood.

Once a baseline has been established, we maintain each Copen around its condition, mileage, use, storage and known history—not simply by replacing parts because a generic schedule says they are due.

Each visit also gives us an opportunity to review previously monitored areas, update the vehicle record and identify gradual changes before they develop into larger repairs.

Depending on the car and its history, this may include:

  • Engine oil and filter

  • Transmission and differential oils

  • Brake and clutch fluid

  • Coolant replacement

  • Spark plugs, filters and drive belts

  • Lubrication and adjustment

  • Roof seals, drains and operating mechanisms

  • Previously monitored components

  • Model-specific preventative maintenance

The work required varies between vehicles. We agree the service scope before parts are ordered or work begins.

AGE-RELATED FAILURES

Repairs & Refresh

A component does not need to have failed before it has reached the end of its useful life.

Low mileage does not stop rubber from hardening, seals from deteriorating, pumps and motors from wearing, electrical components from ageing or hidden metalwork from corroding. Most Copens now have more than one age-related weakness, whether the owner has noticed it or not.

You can wait until something fails. You can act when the first symptoms appear. Or you can replace known age-sensitive components in advance, reducing the risk of breakdown and giving yourself time to choose the right parts and repair plan.

Where several components have spent the same years working together, it may also make more sense to refresh the complete system than to install one new part among several old ones.

Radiators, fan motors, thermostats, hoses, water pumps, gaskets, engine mounts, timing chains and turbochargers.

Fuel, Electrical & Climate Control
Fuel pumps, alternators, oxygen sensors, air-conditioning compressors and condensers.

Drivetrain
Clutches, clutch cables and related operating components.

Brakes, Suspension & Steering
Brake hoses and master cylinders, dampers, bushes, suspension arms, steering joints, rack boots and wheel bearings.

Convertible Roof & Sealing
Hydraulic roof pumps, operating mechanisms, weatherstrips and water sealing.

Lighting & Exhaust
Ageing headlamp units and corroded or deteriorated exhaust components.

These are not theoretical possibilities. They are recurring problems found across ageing Copens.

RENEWING COMPLETE SYSTEMS

Overhaul & Rebuild

Replacing an individual component is not always enough.

When wear, contamination or internal damage has spread through an engine, transmission, differential, brake assembly or driveshaft joint, the complete unit may need to be dismantled and rebuilt.

An overhaul allows internal components to be cleaned, inspected and measured before worn parts, bearings, seals and gaskets are renewed. The unit is then carefully reassembled and tested as a complete operating system.

Rebuilding the unit removed from the car is not the only option. In Japan, replacing it with a professionally rebuilt exchange unit is a well-established solution. Alternators and Active Top hydraulic pumps are typical examples where this approach can reduce workshop time while returning a properly reconditioned unit to service.

Depending on its condition, parts availability and the owner’s plans, the right solution may be to overhaul the original unit, install a rebuilt exchange unit or replace it altogether.

Engine
Complete engine overhaul or partial-engine replacement when external repairs can no longer address internal wear or damage.

Transmission
Manual transmission overhaul or replacement with a professionally rebuilt automatic transmission.

Differential
Inspection and rebuilding of bearings, seals and internal differential components.

Driveshafts & CV Joints
Rebuilding worn driveshaft and CV-joint assemblies, including the CV buckets where required.

Brakes
Front brake-caliper and rear brake-system overhaul when replacing friction components alone is not enough.

Overhaul is not automatically the first answer. It becomes relevant when component-level repairs can no longer restore reliable operation—or when dismantling the unit makes a complete rebuild the more sensible long-term decision.

CORROSION, PRESERVATION & FINISH

Restoration

Restoration begins where routine servicing, component replacement or mechanical rebuilding can no longer address the deterioration surrounding a system or finish.

On a Copen, corrosion and previous repairs are often concealed behind wheel arch liners, bumpers, sill covers and underbody coatings. What appears minor from the outside may have progressed much further underneath.

We dismantle each area far enough to establish its true condition, remove corrosion and failed coatings, repair or replace damaged material where required, and rebuild the protective layers properly.

Restoration is not limited to structural work. Engine bay detailing, paint correction and the renewal of neglected finishes can recover the appearance of sound original material without replacing it unnecessarily.

The scope is determined by what we find and what the owner wants to achieve—not by a generic restoration package.

Restoration work is inspected and scoped individually before parts, materials and labour are confirmed.

An upgrade should solve a problem, support the way the car is used or deliver a clearly understood improvement—not simply add another aftermarket part.

We select components around the condition and specification of the individual Copen, considering how each change will affect the rest of the car.

Parts are installed as part of a complete setup. Where appropriate, this includes checking clearances, ride height, geometry, alignment and the interaction between new and existing components.

The result should feel considered and coherent, whether the objective is greater confidence on the road, improved control, additional protection or a more individual appearance.
